James Macletchie

I am fortunate to live in one of the remotest and most beautiful places in Great Britain. Every morning I wake to the sight of a beautiful unspoilt vista, endless horizons and the sound of the Atlantic Ocean. Growing up beside the ocean encouraged me to dream and travel to offshore islands and it was from these adventures that my wanderlust grew.

I am bilingual and speak the beautiful Gaelic language. I learned it at the age of six when I was fostered in these remote islands. I am both US and UK educated and worked all over the world in tourism development and cultural projects. In 2004 I wrote the Falkland Islands Brochure, “The Natural Choice” and returned to these islands in 2011 to film a documentary for BBC Alba on the contemporary Falkland Islands. I have been a regular on screen contributor to BBC Alba, was the first face of Green TV and the inspiration for Monty Halls Great Hebridean Escape.

It is always a thrill for me to explore Great Britain and marvel at the tapestry of scenery, the majesty of mountain and the diversity of our culture. Our history is a graphic account of treachery, treason, religious dispute and greed. At times blood curdling, yet on the other hand quite moving. The British Isles have been the battleground for many would be ruler and invaders, deceivers and traitors. They all left their mark and their own time capsule of history. On your journey with Grand Circle Travel that history will unravel before your eyes. It is something to behold and to experience.

Working as a Program Director enables me to showcase the beauty of our country to visitors. The vastness of its coastline to the highest peak and the people who live here. Each tour is a personal journey for each traveller and I enjoy the challenge of making it an unforgettable experience for all. In a nutshell : travel is a journey we chose to take into the unknown. It opens our eyes to new places and people and when it is over leaves us with memories to last a lifetime.
